We built a FileMaker-based, mobile-ready POS system that works both at the shop in central Phnom Penh and at events and street stalls across the country. It includes a custom change-calculation feature for Cambodia's US dollar / riel dual-currency economy.
Riceball Phnom Penh is a specialty Japanese-style rice ball shop located in central Phnom Penh. Beyond in-store sales, it frequently runs street stalls at food events and festivals across Cambodia, so it needed a single digital system that could manage every sales setting in one place.
The business needed a mobile POS that worked not only at the fixed shop but also at pop-up stalls at event venues and festivals.
They needed an accurate record of which products sold, when, where and in what quantity — data they could use for inventory, purchasing and sales management.
Cambodia runs on a dual currency of USD and KHR. "Pay in USD, receive change in a mix of USD and KHR" requires custom calculation logic, and off-the-shelf POS apps could not handle it as-is.
The design had to work reliably in places where a stable internet connection is not guaranteed, such as food festival venues.
A MacBook acts as the "mother ship" server running the FileMaker database, with the iPad accessing it in real time through FileMaker Go — a simple and robust setup.
Using FileMaker's host/client model, the MacBook holds the database logic and the product master while the iPad runs a lightweight register UI in FileMaker Go. The near-no-code development speed let us build Cambodia-specific business logic into the system.
For payments made in USD, the system automatically calculates and displays change as an optimal mix of USD and KHR — fully matched to Cambodian business practice.
