For the University of Ghana:
a cashless payment system
building and rolling out "Transonica"

ElektroLibera LLC developed a prepaid e-money system and, working with Transonica of Ghana, rolled it out at the University of Ghana — a cashless environment with zero payment fees, usable on campus, on buses and at shops.

Project background

A Ghanaian student studying in Japan was struck by how convenient Japanese transit IC cards such as Suica are, and wanted to see the same kind of service in his home country. ElektroLibera took up that idea and, in 2020, developed its own e-money system designed around local conditions in Ghana — unreliable infrastructure and a sharp focus on cost. Full-scale rollout in Ghana followed in 2022.

"I want to build something like Suica back home!"
— "Transonica," the e-money system that grew out of a Ghanaian exchange student's idea

How people use it

Existing student and staff ID cards (IC cards) are used as they are as e-money cards. With no cost to issue new cards, going cashless is straightforward.

01

Load cash onto the IC card

Hold the IC card over a SUNMI POS terminal and add cash. A student or staff ID card becomes an e-money card as it is.

02

Balances update in real time

Top-ups are reflected on the server immediately. Balances and usage history can be checked at any time.

03

Pay by tapping the IC card

Just hold the card over the payment terminal and the transaction is done. It works in campus cafeterias, on buses and at partner shops.

Key features

💳

Existing student and staff ID cards, used as they are

Mifare NFC contactless IC cards become e-money cards. No cost to issue new cards.

📱

Works with SUNMI handheld POS

Runs on SUNMI terminals such as the V2Pro and P2Pro, keeping rollout and running costs down.

🚫

Zero payment fees, permanently

None of the fees that come with credit card payments. That translates directly into cost savings.

📡

Works offline

Usable even where internet access is unreliable. Transactions sync to the server automatically afterward.

🔄

Real-time balance management

A REST API integration with Cybozu Kintone reflects payment and top-up data immediately.

🛡️

Central management and fraud prevention

IC card issuance, user information, and sales analysis and audit data are managed together in Kintone.

Where it fits

Cashless payment reaches beyond the university campus into everyday life — commuter buses, partner shops and more. The same system can also be deployed at corporate staff cafeterias, schools and similar settings.
